"Dynomite"! An interesting comedy series about a poor black family trying to make ends meet and make a better life in the projects of Chicago. The show was a huge success since it was a spinoff of Maude in which Florida was the Maude's housekeeper, and it ran on CBS from 1974-1979. She insisted that there be a father role casted for the Evans family, and the role of no-nonsense, strong paternal figure of James Evans (convincingly portrayed by John Amos, also seen in "Roots" and in a recurring role in the last season or so of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air") was born. Siding with James is the boisterous older sibling, J.J., played by former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Jay Pharoah, who very nearly landed his impression of Jimmie Walker’s original (and at the time sensational) breakout role.

This funeral episode was excellent. And it made me laugh! To wit: One of the all-time best sitcoms ever, "Good Times" successfully weaved comedy with real life-situations with good writing, believable situations and a strong, talented cast. The show's ratings were "Dyn-o-Mite" (pun intended), placing among the most-watched shows at that time. They were actually trying to do everything they could to get out of the projects. JJ has to be the unlikeliest playa in the history of television but he always had a lot of girls, which is funny to me. The most important news stories of the day, curated by Post editors and delivered every morning.

I think JJ was a precursor to characters such as Horshack, Screech, Urkel, Rerun, etc. “Good Times” went first, with a rousing rendition of the theme song performed by “Black-ish’s” Anthony Anderson and R&B legend Patti LaBelle, backed by a gold-robed gospel choir. Some may find that chauvinistic by today's standards, but, I'm not so sure about that.

I liked Good Times. J.J. was the skirt-chasing but well-meaning teenage son who made up for his lack of subtlety with artistic talent. He loved his wife. However, once John Amos left, the show was not the same and suffered as a result. Still, this show is an interesting time capsule of subjects that people were concerned about in the 1970's. This show was excellent. They were poor, they were black, and they were living proof that if you have Jesus and your family that nothing is too hard. Fitton's son has problems consummating his marriage while still living in the family's terrace house in Bolton, and his relationship to his wife is nearly ruined, largely due to his father's coarse and competitive behaviour and to the cramped domestic conditions. .

Tresix, I hope you are reading this because I agree with all of your points you have posted. But this is more than made up for by the reality of the Dutts' cramped end-of-terrace house, and the recent increasing tendency of children, both married and single, moving back into the parental home.

They didn't dwell on it. Mrs Dutt recalls the close friendship of her husband and the male friend who'd accompanied him from India to Lancashire. The special’s big reveal was that John Amos, the original “Good Times” star who played James, showed up to play Davis. Michael, involved in legal/justice. Speaking of theme songs, Ja'net DuBois (neighbor Willona) co-wrote and sang another truly memorable one during this time. The way he was written out of the show was very abrupt.

He was tough, but loving and kind. Aids wiped him out not long ago. Sometimes it seems like they aren't as poor as they are supposed to be, but I think it does reflect the life of poor people. Though dismissed as some as showing African-Americans in a negative light (i.e., perpetuating the poor, struggling black family in the projects image), I would have to disagree. This was a family that just happened to be black and live in the projects. These are my questions and comments.

He's given it that Ealing touch – not the dangerous Ealing of Robert Hamer or Alexander Mackendrick, but the cosier, decently honest Ealing of Henry Cornelius and Charles Crichton.

The first is that as few couples in the white community go to the altar nowadays as virgins, problems of marital consummation are now largely confined to more conservative communities.

I understand why Florida would object at times to moving out of the ghetto because you have to have values and do it for the right reasons. The Evans were a real family with real problems, but they also truly loved each other. Damn! ), was treading too far into stereotypes.

The reworking involves few radical changes in Naughton's plot (the Dutts' son Atul, for instance, still works as a projectionist, though in an independently owned cinema showing Bollywood movies). A third is that Naughton's play depends upon the need for a special relationship (respectful going-on fearful) existing between father and son, and behind this a dedication to the continuation of the family. That's when I got hooked!!! J.J. (the eldest brother) was the tall comic relief in this show, and always fought with his sister Thelma (the curvacious beauty). Of course, the film must ultimately remain a comedy and, after tears and fresh understandings, be resolved in an acceptance of conventional values.

Classic episodes include the unfortunate death of James Evans and the one where Penny falls down the elevator shaft.

When people think of downtown Chicago they think of Walter Payton, Ditka and "Da Bears", Ryne Sandberg, The White Sox breaking the curse in 2005 or the immortal Michael Jordan and his six championships (and Finals MVP's) with the Chicago Bulls. James (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Andre Braugher) is voting for the longtime incumbent, Fred Davis. Nobody loves the ’7os more than ABC, which ruled the roost back when even the average ratings would incinerate anything on today. The parents loved their children more than anything, were always there for them , and wanted the best for them. Before leaving my own comments about the TV series GOOD TIMES, I feel that I simply MUST comment on the remarks of one Mr. Larry Wall. I wish that John Amos's character was never killed off because I thought that the show kind of fell apart and lost dignity to what the show was about. Sad part though: the guy who played Micheal(Ralph Carter) recently passed away....but his character was a symbol of black pride and black progress towards black success, and against racial intolerence in with he quoted that the word "boy" is a white racist word. Actually I loved the intro and ending to each show; the painting at the end, the camera sky-views of Chicago, the theme music, the bike rider and citizens. It's been reported that in the series' inception Florida Evans (portrayed by the late, great actress Esther Rolle, also seen in "Rosewood," "Down in the Delta," and "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings") was to leave her job as a maid on the "Maude" series and play a single mother of 3 children in "Good Times." Born in Ireland and raised in Bolton, Naughton emerged as a novelist and playwright in the late 50s in the wave of northern working-class writers like Shelagh Delaney, Keith Waterhouse, Alan Sillitoe, David Storey and Stan Barstow. Sure James would lose jobs and JJ would fail in school but the family always managed to find a way. A movie career? Here we realise that we've entered, if only briefly, the world of Tennessee Williams. Thank God for reruns! Good Times was a groundbreaking comedy about the first nuclear black family living in the Chicago projects. "); Thelma, their only daughter (BernNadette Stanis)who is a disaster in the kitchen, but who had hopes, dreams and intelligence. What is widely acknowledged is that it was the source of the play Rafta, Rafta by Ayub Khan-Din, author of East Is East, a splendid comedy of Asian family life in Salford, and its sequel, the rather less splendid West Is West. The “Good Times” episode chosen by ABC’s producers is one of its most remembered, from November 1975, in which James and Florida Evans are at odds over an upcoming alderman election. I liked many things about this show. As great as it was to see the 79-year-old actor, the live repartee nearly got the better of him a time or two as he reached for his lines, aided by some ad-libbing from his appreciative co-stars. While it’s a fun and experimental idea to restage these fine works of television, I don’t get the idea of bringing back the same cast to do it again.
