Today, the scene looks groundbreaking less for its explicitness and realism than for the elliptical editing style, which anticipated countless stylish, nonlinear flurries of montage (including a comparable love scene in Out Of Sight 25 years later). Might as well chuck this in for 'a laugh'. But none of those undeniable influences account for how it often plays less like straightforward fright fare than a particularly nightmarish drama about grief, and how it can swallow someone whole. he sees his wife at a funeral after she has apparently left venice and he then spends the film looking for her. By taking a more impressionistic approach to his movie than the norm, Roeg gives us a story that has an undeniably chilling atmosphere, built upon hard cuts and interwoven scenes that suggest something far larger and darker at play than the surface narrative we're given.
The film hammers down his skepticism and destroys him. Whilst the film doesn't feel like it makes sense with this completely jarring ending initially, Roeg has seeded crumbs throughout the film as to what actually can be perceived as happening by the time we witness a murder. Roeg has leapt right past the immediate, crushing aftermath of the tragedy, depositing us into an indeterminate later, when the pain of the loss has dulled to a low, persistent throb and the two have begun the impossible process of moving forward with their shattered lives. When speaking with Laura, as the trio meet in the cafe, she tells her: "He has the gift. The ending shocked me totally the first time I saw it.
