It is telling a story from the perspective of a poor Southerner at the end of The Civil War who “is in defeat.” But all of a sudden the song is being presented as problematic—as we knew it eventually would be—and bereft of critical details of the song’s writing and legacy for context.

It is OK to make the Founding Fathers black but ScarJo can’t play a transgender character. It’s about the devastation of war as experienced from the losing side, but, with the possible exception of the line “They should never have taken the very best” (an ambiguous they that could refer to either the Confederate war machine or the Union army), which prompts some audible applause in The Last Waltz, there’s not much in the song that rings as an explicit endorsement of the Confederacy. Early James strikes me as the kind of guy who would be sure to wear his seatbelt as he drove his wife over to her boyfriend’s house at 9:00 PM on a Tuesday, and then wait patiently in the driveway until she was done, and then after 4 hours of sleep would serve her breakfast in bed before heading off to work to provide for almost all her needs.
